A report from NEA and the National Caucus of Native American State Legislators says the state of education in our nation’s K-12 schools for Native students is distressing. Native students perform two to three grade levels below their white peers in reading and mathematics. In addition, the effects of poor economic conditions in many Indian communities add to the challenges facing families and schools. Low-income homes, lack of adequate health care, and other factors create challenges that add to the achievement gap.

NEA Report Dismisses Grim View of Black Student Achievement
Some of nation’s most prestigious colleges are reporting higher graduation rates for blacks than for whites. And, black high school graduates have closed the gap with white students in the percentage completing a mid-level curriculum. Ajuan Mance, Associate Professor of English at Mills College in California, says the media overlooks these gains because "Black people only become visible when they’re perceived as underachievers or in crisis."
